Abstract

There are many complicated expositional, historical and theological issues to interpret Gal. 2:1-5. The most important issue is the question whether Titus, a gentile, was circumcised or not. Paul used different terms for Banaba and Titus when he visited Jerusalem for the second time. Paul expressed that he went to Jerusalem by “going with” Barnabas. However, for Titus, Paul expressed that he was “taking along” Titus to Jerusalem. The different expressions imply different meanings. The author of this study focuses on the interpretation of the reason why Paul took along to Jerusalem. By results, Paul was emphasizing the God’s willingness that makes Christians be free from all religious restrictions including circumcision. Paul established his own apostolate by taking along Titus to Jerusalem, and he showed the rightfulness of his message that all Christians are free from gentile’s circumcision and Moses’ laws.
